Tom Hegen is recognized for his aerial photography, using distance, scale, and abstraction to examine the relationship between human activity and the natural landscape. His work has received several international awards, including recognition from the International Photography Awards and the Leica Oskar Barnack Award. His first book, Habitat, was published in 2018, followed by Aerial Observations on Airports in 2019. Hegen lives and works in Munich.
In collaboration with Atelier Bowy C.D., part of Henzel Studio, Hegen’s The Shark Bay Peninsula (2019), photographed in Western Australia, has been translated into a hand-knotted textile work. The composition retains the visual language of the original photograph while introducing material depth, relief, and surface variation.
The rug is free-form, with variable pile heights used to echo the shifting topography and dynamic character of the landscape. Carefully selected materials enhance the contrast between the composition’s different natural elements, allowing areas of color, texture, and light to emerge with greater intensity.
The work made its worldwide debut at Frieze London No.9 Cork Street, presented by Ulysses de Santi, and was included in the exhibition Modernismo Brasil.
“I see myself as a photographer with a documentary, yet also, an artistically abstract approach.”
— Tom Hegen
