Scott Campbell is an American artist whose practice moves fluidly between tattooing, sculpture, drawing, and installation, contributing to a broader reconsideration of tattoo as both cultural language and contemporary art form. Widely recognized for elevating the medium beyond its traditional contexts, Campbell has carried the vocabulary of tattoo — its symbolism, precision, and permanence — into other artistic disciplines, allowing its visual codes to inhabit new materials and spaces.

Central to his work is the translation of line from skin to object. Campbell redirects the intricate mark-making associated with tattoo into unexpected surfaces, from delicate watercolor and graphite compositions rendered on eggshells to carved sculptural forms. In doing so, he reframes tattoo not simply as decoration, but as a system of belief and communication, touching on themes of ritual, devotion, authority, and the symbolic languages through which individuals construct identity and meaning.

In one of his most multifaceted bodies of work, Campbell employs U.S. dollar bills as raw material, stacking and meticulously cutting away layers to create sunken reliefs. The process parallels tattooing itself: just as a needle penetrates the skin to embed ink, Campbell excavates the surface of currency, transforming a symbol of economic value into a site of reflection. Text and iconography emerge from these altered bills, pointing to contradictions embedded within ideas of wealth, desire, and emotional life.

For HENZEL STUDIO, Campbell created a free-form design based on the image of a dollar bill, marked with the handwritten letters “L, L, Y,” spelling the word LONELY. Translated into hand-knotted form, the work juxtaposes the familiar signifier of monetary exchange with a personal, almost confessional gesture, extending Campbell’s exploration of value — both economic and human — into a tactile medium.

Selected exhibitions include presentations at the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art, Moscow; OHWOW, Los Angeles; and D Museum Youth, Seoul.

In Palazzo, Henzel approaches the historical rug as material under pressure, not an object of preservation. Classical patterns are cut, sanded, washed, stained, and weathered—pushing the rug from decoration into a sculptural field shaped by force and time.

Jwan Yosef: Intimacies

The Intimacies capsule translates Jwan Yosef’s paintings into dye-injected chromogenic prints on velour, relocating painterly gesture to a tactile textile surface. Stretch, scrape, and touch—actions central to Yosef’s studio practice—are carried from canvas into pile, where image becomes object and proximity replaces distance. Yosef’s work explores dualism and in-between states: authentic and synthetic, exposure and concealment, intimacy and distance. By shifting fine-art language into textile form, the series questions how medium shapes meaning and how the body meets the image. Each rug functions as a physically encountered painting, holding the viewer within the tension of presence, desire, and material. Produced within the Henzel Studio Collaborations program and as part of The Dual Terrains collection. Launched at Culture Edit Gallery, Los Angeles.

Marking Over a Decade of Exhibitions in Milan

This collection features hand-knotted rugs by Calle Henzel alongside works from the Henzel Studio Collaborations program, previously shown at MiArt and Salone del Mobile. Combining traditional craftsmanship with contemporary vision, the rugs transform space as dynamic art objects. In addition to Henzel’s designs, the collection includes collaborations with artists such as Helmut Lang, Mickalene Thomas, John Waters, and Anselm Reyle, preserving each artist’s essence while exploring the possibilities of hand-knotting.

Launching at Milan Design Week: The Atelier Editions

Atelier Bowy C.D., Henzel Studio’s curatorial and experimental space, fosters dialogue between architecture, design, and contemporary art. Through The Atelier Editions, it brings together architects, designers, and artists to create limited-edition rugs as sculptural objects. Each piece explores material, gesture, and surface, offering experimental, poetic, and personal interpretations that challenge perception and expand the handmade rug’s place in contemporary practice.

Henzel Studio x Carsten Höller

Carsten Höller creates mushroom-inspired works to explore altered states of perception, the dualities of nature—both harmless and toxic—and the intersection of science and art. Drawing on his scientific training, Höller has long been fascinated by fungi, particularly the psychedelic Amanita muscaria, which he transforms into sculptural “confusion machines” that challenge perception and spark curiosity. For Henzel Studio, Höller has translated this ethos into the Mushroom Rug, a limited-edition hand-knotted piece that brings the whimsical and transformative qualities of his sculptural mushrooms into a tactile, functional form. The rug invites viewers to engage with space, texture, and color in a way that blurs the boundaries between art, design, and experience.
