Douglas Gordon is widely regarded as one of the most consequential artists of his generation to emerge from Britain. Working across photography, text, sculpture, and installation, he has consistently returned to film and the moving image as a means to interrogate perception, temporality, and the construction of memory. Since the early 1990s, Gordon has developed a language of appropriation and transformation, taking culturally familiar images and subjecting them to processes of repetition, mirroring, and temporal dislocation.
His seminal video installations revisit canonical films — including Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho, John Ford’s The Searchers, and Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver — slowing, doubling, or fragmenting their sequences to the point where narrative dissolves into duration. In Gordon’s hands, cinema becomes material: stretched, suspended, and reconfigured to expose the psychological and emotional frameworks through which images are internalized. Recognition gives way to uncertainty, and the viewer is returned to the act of looking as an active, unstable process.
For HENZEL STUDIO, Gordon conceived a two-panel composition as an homage to Gustave Courbet’s L’Origine du Monde. Rendered in textile, the diptych extends his investigation of doubling and displacement, translating a historically charged image into a new material and spatial register, where tactility and surface replace projection and light while retaining the work’s conceptual tension.
His work is included in numerous international collections, including Tate, London; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Centre Pompidou, Paris; and Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg. Selected exhibitions include presentations at the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C.; Hayward Gallery, London; Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris; and the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh.
