Jonathan Horowitz is a New York–based artist whose practice spans video, sculpture, sound installation, painting, and photography. Since the late 1980s, he has developed a body of work that engages directly with the cultural and political climate of its moment, addressing subjects such as race, sexuality, religion, celebrity, and consumerism. Drawing on the visual language of mass media, popular culture, and modernist form, Horowitz examines how systems of representation shape collective consciousness and personal identity.
Horowitz’s work often juxtaposes aesthetic clarity with charged content, using strategies of repetition, appropriation, and symbolic color to foreground the ideological frameworks embedded in everyday imagery. His projects invite reflection on how images circulate, how values are constructed, and how histories of activism and visibility continue to inform contemporary debates. Balancing critique with moments of poetic resonance, his practice situates formal abstraction alongside urgent social inquiry.
For HENZEL STUDIO, Horowitz created a free-form composition titled Rainbow Cross for Two. Translating his longstanding engagement with color as both formal and political language, the work brings together geometric structure and chromatic symbolism, extending themes of duality, solidarity, and shared experience into the tactile medium.
Horowitz’s work has been widely exhibited internationally and is included in major museum collections, reflecting his sustained contribution to conversations around art, politics, and visual culture.
Selected exhibitions: The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York, MoMA PS1, New York, Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston; Museum Ludwig, Cologne and CAM Contemporary Art Museum, St. Louis.
