Carsten Höller creates mushroom-inspired works to explore altered states of perception, the dualities of nature—both harmless and toxic—and the intersection of science and art. Drawing on his background in scientific research, Höller has long been fascinated by fungi, particularly the psychedelic Amanita muscaria, which he often transforms into sculptural “confusion machines” designed to destabilize expectations, heighten awareness, and spark curiosity. His mushrooms are at once playful and unsettling, evoking both the natural world and its potential to shift our experience of reality.

For Henzel Studio, Höller has translated this ethos into the Mushroom Rug, a limited-edition hand-knotted piece that embodies the whimsical and transformative qualities of his sculptural works while inviting new forms of interaction within the domestic sphere. Every detail of the rug reflects the tactile immediacy and visual impact of Höller’s practice, transforming the floor into a site of discovery where function and artwork converge.

The rug becomes more than a surface—it is an immersive object that alters the way a room is perceived. Its rich textures, intricate knotting, and bold composition encourage viewers to engage with space in a heightened way, blurring the boundaries between art, design, and lived experience. This collection reimagines historical design languages through material experimentation and conceptual disruption. Drawing inspiration from classical motifs, each piece is transformed with techniques such as gestural paint spills, sculptural pile carving, and layered textures. The Assemblage collection began with Calle Henzel’s studio experiments with torn and layered paper, exploring how fragments can be broken apart, reconfigured, and still belong. Translated into hand-knotted rugs, the compositions mimic textures like stone, fabric, metal, and patina, uniting disparate elements into cohesive works. Each rug carries the imprint of collage and construction, transforming tactile immediacy into monumental, artful surfaces that question how fragments and wholes coexist. Collection coming soon.

Studio Editions: Claude Guillaumin x Atelier Bowy

In collaboration with Kalkeriet Contemporary, Henzel Studio presents a limited-edition capsule by French artist Claude Guillaumin (b. 1946), exploring photography, materiality, and form. The collection features curated photographs and chromogenic-printed rugs that transform his images into tactile, immersive objects, designed for indoor and outdoor use while retaining tonal depth and material richness. This collaboration reimagines photographic narratives as hybrid forms bridging representation, surface, and space.

Marking Over a Decade of Exhibitions in Milan

This collection features hand-knotted rugs by Calle Henzel alongside works from the Henzel Studio Collaborations program, previously shown at MiArt and Salone del Mobile. Combining traditional craftsmanship with contemporary vision, the rugs transform space as dynamic art objects. In addition to Henzel’s designs, the collection includes collaborations with artists such as Helmut Lang, Mickalene Thomas, John Waters, and Anselm Reyle, preserving each artist’s essence while exploring the possibilities of hand-knotting.

Atelier Bowy C.D., Henzel Studio’s curatorial and experimental space, fosters dialogue between architecture, design, and contemporary art.
