Katerina Jebb is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice investigates the relationship between image, object, and technology through the development of a highly specialized scanning process. Employing large-scale digital scanners as both tool and subject, Jebb has devised a method that allows objects to be recorded with exacting precision while simultaneously reconstructing them as composite images. This process shifts the act of capture into one of translation, producing works that challenge conventional distinctions between photography, reproduction, and material presence.
For HENZEL STUDIO, Jebb created Fallen White Pigment, based on one of her scans made during an extended period of research in the preserved studio of Balthus. The work originates from a direct encounter with material residue—pigment spilled decades earlier — recorded through the artist’s characteristically slow and analytical process. As Jebb describes:
“Over a period of several years, I documented hundreds of objects and spaces in and around Balthus’ studio, which has remained intact since his death in 2001. Upon my exploration I came across a dark corner beneath the window, where a large paper package containing white pigment had spilled onto the wooden floor some twenty-five years ago. I placed the scanner one centimeter above the fallen white pigment and reproduced the surface of the floor.”
Translated into textile, the work preserves the quiet intensity of this observation, where minute variations of tone and texture become the subject itself. The rug extends Jebb’s investigation into how technologies of recording can register time, trace, and material memory, rearticulating them through the physical language of hand-knotted form.
Jebb’s work is included in major museum collections, notably The Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. Her practice was the subject of a solo exhibition in 2016 at the Musée Réattu, Arles, France.Select exhibitions / Public collections: The Whitney Museum, New York; The Metropolitan Museum, New York; V&A Museum, London.
