Bjarne Melgaard’s multidisciplinary practice confronts the psychological and cultural structures that define belonging and exclusion. Working across drawing, painting, sculpture, and installation, he constructs charged environments populated by figures and symbols drawn from subcultures, mythology, and the emotional registers of contemporary life. His work inhabits a space where vulnerability and aggression, desire and alienation, are held in uneasy proximity.
The carpet series, derived from Melgaard’s raw pencil drawings, translates this immediacy into textile form. Retaining the directness of the hand, the works read as both image and trace—records of impulse as much as composition. They stage narratives of fear, otherness, and longing, asking how instinct and passion are regulated by social codes, and who is permitted to exist within their boundaries.
Melgaard’s iconography moves fluidly between high and low culture, invoking references as varied as the Pink Panther, Planet of the Apes, and Edvard Munch. These figures operate less as quotations than as psychological markers, forming a visual language through which marginal identities and subcultural positions are made visible. Humor and unease coexist, destabilizing distinctions between innocence and threat, fantasy and lived experience.
His works are held in major international collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Rubell Museum, Miami; and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.
Selected exhibitions: Astrup Fearnley Museum, Oslo; Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac, London; Munch Museum, Oslo & Julia Stoschek Foundation, Berlin.
