Leo Gabin has worked as a collective since the early 2000s, developing a practice that spans video, digital media, drawing, print, painting, and sculpture. Their work draws directly from the vast and continuous flow of imagery circulating online, incorporating found, downloaded, and screen-captured material into compositions that reflect the visual conditions of the networked age.
Engaging with the languages of social media, advertising, and tabloid culture, Leo Gabin examines the volatility and immediacy that shape contemporary youth culture and image consumption. References to sex, celebrity, and spectacle surface alongside a pointed social awareness, filtered through an aesthetic informed both by the street art environments the artists encountered in their formative years and by a critical understanding of art-historical and market-driven conventions. Fashion imagery mutates into quasi-expressionistic painting, sensational headlines become compositional devices, and familiar digital fragments are recast as physical objects.
Rejecting romantic notions of authorship, the collective employs aggregation, editing, and translation as core strategies, allowing meaning to emerge from the collision of circulated images. Their works foreground the instability of value and attention in an era defined by endless scrolling and instantaneous visibility, exposing the often uneasy realities embedded within the content that saturates everyday digital life.
For HENZEL STUDIO, Leo Gabin produced a work based on a silkscreened image sourced online. Painterly interventions were layered onto the composition and translated into textile through the use of variable pile heights, creating a tactile surface that mirrors the stratified textures of the original while extending the collective’s investigation of digital imagery into material form.
