Tony Oursler is a pioneering figure in new media whose work, since the 1970s, has fundamentally expanded the possibilities of video and installation within contemporary art. Working across video, sculpture, sound, and performance, Oursler has developed an influential practice that integrates projected moving images with constructed objects and immersive environments, dissolving boundaries between screen, space, and viewer.
Emerging from a generation shaped by experimental film and performance, Oursler approached video not as a purely time-based medium but as a sculptural and psychological one. His works frequently feature disembodied faces, fragmented bodies, and narrative voices projected onto fabric, architectural forms, or handmade structures, creating unsettling yet often darkly humorous encounters. Through these hybrid forms, he examines how technology mediates human emotion, perception, and communication, probing the effects of mass media, surveillance, and electronic culture on the construction of identity.
Oursler’s installations are characterized by an atmosphere that is at once theatrical and intimate, inviting viewers into environments where the familiar becomes estranged and the inanimate appears to speak. By collapsing distinctions between object and image, he has helped redefine the experiential dimension of media art, influencing subsequent generations of artists working with video and digital technologies.
Oursler’s work is held in numerous public and private collections, including the Broad Art Foundation, Los Angeles; CAPC Musée d’Art Contemporain de Bordeaux; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona; Tate Modern, London; and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York.
