Sanford Biggers is a contemporary American artist whose multidisciplinary practice spans sculpture, video, installation, music, and performance. His work operates between structure and improvisation, combining conceptual rigor with material experimentation. Drawing on sources such as Buddhist philosophy, hip-hop, jazz, cosmology, Afrofuturism, and the legacy of quilt-making, Biggers examines how meaning is constructed, transmitted, and reinterpreted across time. These references function as interconnected frameworks through which he considers identity, spirituality, and collective memory.
Born in Los Angeles in 1970, Biggers received his MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1999. Textiles often play a central role in his work, valued both for their formal possibilities and for their historical associations with storytelling and coded communication. Patterns recalling African American quilts, astronomical diagrams, or mandala structures create visual systems of rhythm and repetition that parallel musical composition. He currently lives and works in New York, continuing to explore how materials carry cultural resonance and how abstraction can open space for reflection.
For HENZEL STUDIO, Biggers reappropriated his painting Ibeji (Duet), translating its layered composition into a hand-knotted textile. The title references the Yoruba concept of twinship, a theme that recurs in his practice as a metaphor for duality, syncopation, and mirrored histories. In its textile form, the work underscores his longstanding engagement with fabric as both surface and symbol, allowing the tactile medium to echo the rhythmic, composite nature that defines his artistic language.
Biggers’ work is held in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, among others.
