Tim Noble & Sue Webster are internationally acclaimed British artists associated with the post-YBA generation, known for a collaborative practice that interrogates authorship, identity, and the relationship between object and image. Since first meeting in 1986 as Fine Art students at Nottingham Trent University—where a shared interest in art and punk music forged a lasting partnership—the duo has cultivated a body of work that combines conceptual rigor with a distinctly irreverent sensibility.
Working across sculpture, installation, and light-based works, Noble and Webster are best known for transforming accumulations of found materials—often detritus or cast-off objects—into precisely orchestrated arrangements that, when illuminated, project sharply defined shadow portraits. These works stage a tension between abjection and illusion, inviting viewers to reconsider how meaning, likeness, and value are constructed through perception. Their practice frequently incorporates references to popular culture, music, and personal mythology, positioning autobiography alongside broader reflections on excess, consumption, and the mechanics of representation.
Noble and Webster studied at Cheltenham Art College and Leicester Polytechnic before completing their education at Nottingham Trent University. Their work is held in numerous public collections, including the National Portrait Gallery, London; ARKEN Museum of Modern Art, Copenhagen; and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York. In 2007, they were awarded the ARKEN Prize, and in 2009 they received Honorary Doctorates of Art from Nottingham Trent University in recognition of their artistic achievements.
Selected exhibitions and collections include the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; Serpentine Gallery, London; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Gagosian, New York; Freud Museum, London; MoMA PS1, New York; and Castello di Rivoli Museo d’Arte Contemporanea, Turin.
