Wilhelm Sasnal is a contemporary Polish artist recognized for a practice that encompasses painting, drawing, film, and photography. His work draws from a wide range of sources—including mass media, personal experience, historical imagery, and everyday observation—filtered through a restrained visual language that is at once direct and elusive. Sasnal’s compositions often appear deceptively simple, employing muted, photographic tones and pared-down forms that suggest narrative without fully resolving it, leaving space for ambiguity and reflection.
Engaging with the circulation of images in contemporary life, Sasnal examines how visual memory is constructed and mediated. References to art history, politics, and popular culture coexist with intimate or banal motifs, producing works that oscillate between the personal and the collective. His approach to painting emphasizes reduction and translation, transforming source material into surfaces that carry a quiet tension, where clarity and unease remain in balance.
For HENZEL STUDIO, Sasnal adapted a pencil drawing of linear outlines on graph paper into textile form. Variations in pile height articulate the graphite lines as incised contours, creating a carved effect, while the introduction of silk within the gridded fields establishes tonal contrast and subtle shifts in luminosity. The work extends Sasnal’s investigation of translation—from image to surface, from drawing to material—into a tactile register.
Sasnal is widely regarded as one of the leading painters of his generation. His work is held in major international collections, including The Museum of Modern Art, New York; Centre Pompidou, Paris; and Tate Modern, London.
