Ashley Bickerton was an British-born American artist, celebrated for his large-scale conceptual, and often bitingly critical work, and for his association with the 1980s Neo-Geo movement. The British-born American artist Ashley Bickerton (1959–2022) completed his BFA at the California Institute of the Arts in Southern California and the Independent Study Program of the Whitney Museum of American Art in the1980's. In New York he established himself, alongside Jeff Koons and Peter Halley, as a member of the so-called Neo-Geo movement, a conceptual art movement that revived aspects of Minimalism, Op Art and Pop Art within a new Post-modern context to criticize consumerism, commercialism, and mechanization. Bickerton’s work is represented in numerous international public collections. His work for Henzel Studio was based on his established celebrated themes and iconography of tropical surrealism, green-headed characters, and assemblages. Bickerton’s work is in numerous international public and private collections, including the Broad, Los Angeles; Ellipse Foundation, Amsterdam; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York.
Selected exhibitions: The Museum of Modern Art, New York; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Hara Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo & Tate Britain, London.
