Ashley Bickerton (1959–2022) was a British-born American artist known for his large-scale, conceptually driven works and his sharp critique of consumer culture and systems of value. He emerged in the 1980s as a key figure associated with the Neo-Geo movement, alongside artists such as Jeff Koons and Peter Halley. This tendency revisited aspects of Minimalism, Op Art, and Pop Art within a postmodern framework, using industrial aesthetics and strategies of branding to examine commodification, authorship, and the mechanisms of the art market.
Bickerton completed his BFA at the California Institute of the Arts and attended the Independent Study Program of the Whitney Museum of American Art. After settling in New York, he developed hybrid works that merged painting, sculpture, and display, often incorporating corporate logos, fabricated materials, and self-referential devices that questioned authenticity and artistic identity.
In the 1990s, following his move to Bali, his practice expanded to include a vivid, highly personal visual language often described as tropical surrealism. Saturated color, fragmented figures, and recurring motifs—such as green-headed characters and complex assemblages—combined satire and psychological reflection, exploring tensions between paradise, artifice, and globalization.
For HENZEL STUDIO, Bickerton adapted these established themes and iconography into textile form, translating his layered imagery into a woven medium that continues his investigation of surface, fabrication, and perception.
His work is represented in numerous international collections, including The Broad, Los Angeles; the Ellipse Foundation, Amsterdam; the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, and has been exhibited at institutions such as The Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Hara Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo; and Tate Britain, London.
