Works from the Henzel Studio Collaborations program are available in proportionally scaled sizes based on the original composition, ensuring that the artistic vision and conceptual integrity of each collaboration remain intact. Olaf Breuning is a Swiss-born contemporary artist whose multidisciplinary practice spans performance, film, photography, sculpture, and drawing. His work is marked by a distinctive combination of humor and disquiet, constructing staged scenarios that appear playful at first encounter yet subtly probe the mechanisms through which images, identities, and cultural myths are produced and consumed. Breuning frequently employs exaggeration, artifice, and theatricality as tools to examine how meaning is mediated in an image-saturated world.

Public projects such as Clouds, his installation in Central Park—composed of bright blue aluminum cloud forms suspended high above the landscape—demonstrate his ability to insert moments of visual estrangement into familiar environments. In photographic series such as The Art Freaks (2011), Breuning painted the bodies of nude models to evoke the stylistic languages of figures including Pablo Picasso, Francis Bacon, Jackson Pollock, and On Kawara, playfully questioning the authority of canonical artworks and the ways they are encountered through reproduction and cultural memory.

Breuning lives and works between New York and Zürich, maintaining a practice that moves fluidly between studio production and site-responsive installations, often blurring distinctions between sincerity and parody, critique and entertainment.

For HENZEL STUDIO, Breuning created a unique free-form design in which intertwined human silhouettes are rendered through shifts in pile height. The sculptural surface translates his interest in the body, outline, and playful distortion into textile, allowing figuration to emerge through texture and contour rather than line alone.

Art Basel Paris

During Art Basel Paris, October 23–25, Henzel Studio will present Oxidation Painting (01) at Meyer Zafra in the Marais, part of our ongoing collaboration with The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.

Based on Warhol’s Oxidation Paintings from 1978, the work translates one of the artist’s most radical and abstract bodies of work into a hand-knotted composition in wool and silk.

Warhol created the original paintings by coating canvases with copper paint and exposing the surface to oxidation, producing unpredictable shifts in color, texture and metallic depth. Following two years of development, Henzel Studio reinterpreted these effects through material, pile height and hand-knotting, creating a textile work that preserves the visual complexity of the original process.

Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner

Henzel Studio is honored to collaborate with the Pollock-Krasner Foundation on an original collection of hand-knotted textile works inspired by the artistic legacies of Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner.

Both artists transformed the language of abstraction through distinct approaches to gesture, material, structure and reinvention. The collaboration explores how their visual languages can be interpreted through texture, pile, carving and construction, extending their artistic legacies into the field of collectible design.

Close to half of the selection comprises completed rugs ready to ship in their existing specifications, in several cases with a choice of stocked sizes. The collection also includes designs specifically developed for production and delivery within a shorter timeframe. These may be tailored in size, colour and shape to respond precisely to the proportions, palette and character of an individual setting.

Every rug is realised with the exceptional materials, hand-knotted craftsmanship and meticulous attention to detail that define Henzel Studio, without compromise.

Kalkeriet Contemporary

Kalkeriet Contemporary in Malmö, Sweden, is Henzel Studio’s official gallery in Scandinavia. Working in close partnership with the studio, the gallery serves as a regional point of contact for private collectors, interior designers and architects.

A dedicated presentation of Henzel Studio’s artist collaborations and Calle Henzel’s signature collections offers visitors the opportunity to experience the rugs’ materials, textures and sculptural qualities in person.

Through a direct dialogue with Henzel Studio, Kalkeriet provides personal guidance on available works, bespoke commissions and project specifications, bringing the studio’s collections and expertise closer to the Scandinavian market.

Henzel Studio Collaborations

Since 2013, Henzel Studio Collaborations has brought together more than thirty contemporary artists to explore the hand-knotted rug as a medium for artistic expression. Developed through close dialogue with Calle Henzel and specialist artisan workshops, each collaboration translates an individual artistic practice into works defined by material, texture, scale and form.

The program debuted at Barneys New York on Madison Avenue in 2014, with twelve limited-edition rugs presented in an installation designed by Dennis Freedman during Frieze Art Fair New York. Subsequent collaborations and exhibitions have featured works by Richard Prince, Helmut Lang, Anselm Reyle and Mickalene Thomas, among others.

Through Henzel Studio Heritage, this dialogue extends to artists’ estates and foundations, opening new perspectives on influential artistic legacies. Together, these ongoing exchanges explore how an artwork can inhabit space—on the wall, across the floor and within the architecture around it.

Bespoke production has been central to Henzel Studio since its foundation. Calle Henzel’s collections are created with adaptability in mind, allowing each work to respond to its architectural setting while preserving the integrity of the original design.

The studio’s bespoke design service is included with every rug acquisition, with no additional design fee. In close dialogue with clients, architects and interior designers, dimensions, colour, shape, materials, pile height, carving, knot density and construction can be refined in response to the project.

Every bespoke rug is made entirely by hand by master artisans using exceptional natural materials and museum-quality craftsmanship. Whether created for a private residence, hospitality project or cultural institution, each work establishes a lasting dialogue between contemporary art, architecture and collectible design.

Richard Prince / Sodalizi Temporanei

Henzel Studio returns to Imperfettogallery, for Sodalizi Temporanei, opening Monday, 20 April during Milan Design Week 2026. On the occasion of the exhibition, Henzel Studio presents the launch of RICHARD PRINCE, 1967, a work conceived by the artist in 2013 and now, thirteen years later, introduced for the first time as a hand-knotted rug in an edition of 20. This release follows the studio’s first collaboration with Richard Prince, 1234-5678-910, presented in 2013, and marks a continued dialogue between contemporary artistic practice and textile form.

Cultural Initiatives

Beyond its collections and artist collaborations, Henzel Studio has maintained a longstanding engagement with cultural and philanthropic initiatives connected to contemporary art, hand-knotting traditions and responsible production. Since its inception, the studio has approached the rug not only as an object for the interior, but as a medium through which artists, institutions and artisan communities may enter into dialogue.

Through Henzel Studio Collaborations and Henzel Studio Heritage, artist-designed rugs have been presented in institutional, gallery and benefit contexts internationally. These initiatives have brought together contemporary artists, foundations and cultural organizations while extending the hand-knotted rug beyond conventional distinctions between art, craft and design.

Henzel Studio has organized and contributed to benefit auctions supporting organizations including the Elton John AIDS Foundation, The Goss-Michael Foundation and GoodWeave. Presented in collaboration with platforms such as Paddle8 and Artsy, these initiatives have included works by leading contemporary artists and estates, with proceeds directed toward charitable and cultural causes.
