Lawrence Weiner (1942–2021) was an American conceptual artist and one of the key figures in the emergence of conceptual art in the 1960s and ’70s. Working with language as his primary material, Weiner rejected the idea that an artwork must exist as a unique, physical object. Instead, he proposed that a work could reside equally in its written formulation, its realization in space, or in the viewer’s own mental construction. This position, outlined in his seminal Statements (1968), shifted attention from object to idea and redefined authorship, permanence, and ownership.
Across five decades, Weiner developed forms of presentation and circulation that bypassed traditional hierarchies of display. His works appeared as wall texts, publications, posters, and public installations—each iteration remaining materially flexible while conceptually fixed. The typographic installations he termed “wall sculptures” employed direct, non-descriptive lettering, allowing the language itself to function as both image and structure, with the actions or conditions described in the text understood as the work’s material.
For HENZEL STUDIO, Weiner translated this linguistic practice into a textile context. The carpet features the phrase “From Before and After,” paired with graphic elements, extending his investigation into how meaning is carried across surfaces and formats. Rather than treating the rug as a decorative ground, Weiner approached it as another site for inscription—where reading, perception, and spatial experience converge.
