John Waters is a pioneering filmmaker, writer, and artist whose subversive and satirical work has left a lasting imprint on contemporary culture. Renowned for his transgressive films—including 'Pink Flamingos' (1972), 'Female Trouble' (1974), and 'Hairspray' (1988)—Waters has challenged conventions of taste and artistic expression with sharp wit and fearless creativity. His influence extends beyond cinema into literature, photography, and fine art, where his work continues to provoke and entertain.
In his visual art, Waters explores themes of celebrity, censorship, and the absurdity of American culture, often using found imagery, wordplay, and appropriation to create unexpected juxtapositions. His work subverts traditional notions of high and low culture, reflecting the same irreverence and biting humor that define his films.
Henzel Studio proudly launched his rug Contemporary Art Hates You, 2009 / 2025 at PDC Design Gallery (formerly MOCA West Hollywood) in conjunction with Frieze. This piece embodies Waters’ ongoing engagement with contemporary art, confronting its hierarchies and self-seriousness with his signature mix of satire and affection.
Selected exhibitions: Baltimore Museum of Art; The Academy Museum, Los Angeles; Sprüth Magers, Berlin; Marianne Boesky Gallery, New York; and Wexner Center for the Arts, Columbus.
