The starting point for the Assemblage collection was Calle Henzel’s experimentation in the studio, where he began working with torn and cut pieces of paper—arranging, shifting, and layering them into new compositions. These fragments became studies in how a surface can be broken apart, reconfigured, and still retain a sense of belonging. From these initial gestures, Henzel translated the concept into textiles, developing compositions that mimic the qualities of different surfaces — stone, fabric, metal, patina, and worn or folded textures — yet remain unified through their materiality.
Each rug is both a fragment and a whole: sections that appear autonomous but are bound together within one work. The title, Assemblage, reflects this process. Borrowed from art history, the term describes the act of bringing together disparate elements into a single composition. In Henzel’s work, this principle unfolds both visually and materially, where divided parts coexist and softness transforms into the illusion of other surfaces.
Executed with artisanal precision, the rugs carry the imprint of collage and construction, echoing the tactile immediacy of their origins while transforming into monumental, hand-knotted pieces. In the context of Atelier Bowy C.D., Assemblage becomes more than a collection of rugs: it is an inquiry into how surfaces are perceived, how fragments can remain connected, and how a unified whole can emerge from what has been divided.
