Mickalene Thomas is a distinguished multidisciplinary visual artist recognized for her ability to merge art-historical, political, and pop-cultural references into dynamic figurative and abstract compositions. Her work challenges traditional narratives of beauty, power, and representation, drawing from a rich tapestry of influences, including 1970s domestic aesthetics, culture, and the legacies of female empowerment.
The medium of a hand-knotted rug naturally aligns with the immersive environments Thomas constructs in her practice—spaces layered with textiles, wallpaper, furniture, and decorative objects that evoke the interiors of her childhood and broader cultural histories. These richly textured settings serve as both homage and critique, exploring identity, memory, and the intersection of personal and collective experience.
MICKALENE THOMAS, Untitled #14, 2015 / 2025, launched at the exhibition Henzel Studio Collaborations 1st Decade in conjunction with Frieze Los Angeles at PDC Design Gallery (formerly MOCA West Hollywood), embodies Thomas’ distinctive visual language. Through her bold use of color, intricate layering, and dynamic surface interplay, the work extends her exploration of materiality and form into a new medium, further bridging the boundaries between fine art and design.
Thomas’ work is held in numerous international public and private collections, including The Museum of Modern Art, New York; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Solomon R.
