Initiated in 2013 by Joakim Andreasson alongside Calle and Asa Henzel, Henzel Studio Collaborations emerged as an unprecedented platform at the nexus of contemporary art and handcrafted design. The program made its debut in 2014 with twelve limited-edition rugs, unveiled at Barneys New York Madison Avenue in a site-specific installation designed by Dennis Freedman in conjunction with Frieze Art Fair New York. Hailed as a game-changer in the dynamics between art and design, this landmark presentation garnered unparalleled critical acclaim, redefining the dialogue between fine art and interior landscapes.
Since its inception, Henzel Studio Collaborations has continued to expand its global presence, staging dedicated exhibitions at renowned venues including JOYCE (Hong Kong), Colette Gallery (Paris), The Edition West Hollywood (Los Angeles), Gagosian (New York), PDC Design Gallery (Los Angeles), The Goss-Michael Foundation (Dallas), Twentieth Gallery (Los Angeles), and The Webster (Miami). Select pieces have also been exhibited in institutional contexts, with museum presentations at MOCA Cleveland, Boca Raton Museum of Art, and Katonah Museum of Art, among others.

Henzel Studio Collaborations 1st Decade
Henzel Studio is pleased to announce an exhibition at PDC Design Gallery, celebrating the first decade of Henzel Studio’s program of artist-designed rugs. Alongside more than 25 rugs, the exhibition will unveil a new rug designed in collaboration with artist and filmmaker John Waters, as well as new designs by Mickalene Thomas and Anselm Reyle.
The exhibition Henzel Studio Collaborations 1st Decade is accompanied by a curated selection of collectible designs by Verter Turroni, realized in collaboration with Imperfettolab and Kalkeriet Contemporary.
The PDC Design Gallery, a 2,780-square-foot, museum-quality two-level space in West Hollywood's Pacific Design Center Plaza, opened in March 2022. Formerly MOCA's West Hollywood location for nearly 20 years, it hosted exhibitions featuring Rick Owens, Takashi Murakami, and more. The gallery now explores design as an extension of artistic practice, engaging renowned artists, designers, and curators.
The exhibition features works by Vanessa Beecroft, Richard Bernstein, Olaf Breuning, Scott Campbell, Jake & Dinos Chapman, Nan Goldin, Kim Gordon, Calle Henzel, Carsten Höller, Katerina Jebb, Robert Knoke, Mary McCartney, Marilyn Minter, Tim Noble & Sue Webster, Tony Oursler, Jack Pierson, Richard Prince, Anselm Reyle, Mickalene Thomas, Jwan Yosef, and Andy Warhol.

Henzel Studio Collaborations
The program has brought together over thirty leading contemporary artists, each engaging with the medium of hand-knotted rugs as an extension of their artistic practice. Among them are Ashley Bickerton, Sanford Biggers, Olaf Breuning, Scott Campbell, Leo Gabin, Nan Goldin, Douglas Gordon, Kim Gordon, Carsten Höller, Jonathan Horowitz, Robert Knoke, Helmut Lang, Linder, Bjarne Melgaard, Marilyn Minter, Tim Noble & Sue Webster, Tony Oursler, Richard Phillips, Jack Pierson, Richard Prince, Anselm Reyle, Wilhelm Sasnal, Juergen Teller, Mickalene Thomas, and Lawrence Weiner.
Through Henzel Studio Heritage, the initiative has also fostered collaborations with artists' estates, resulting in extensive collections developed in partnership with the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts and the Tom of Finland Foundation. These partnerships extend the program’s reach beyond contemporary practices, preserving and reinterpreting the legacies of groundbreaking artists through the lens of textile artistry.
By continuously challenging the boundaries of materiality and authorship, Henzel Studio Collaborations affirms the rug as both an artistic medium and a collector’s object—where the language of contemporary art converges with centuries-old craftsmanship.

An unprecedented program
Free to disregard design movements and related principles and rules, the featured artists were invited to freely and seamlessly translate their work and artistic ethos into the media at hand, exploring shape, volume, and finishing, where practicality was secondary to concept. This creative brief allows all artists to embrace the outcome as part of their body of work.
Art rugs have been around for quite some time in various forms, and some of the most prominent artists including Francis Bacon, Louise Bourgeois, Alexander Calder, Robert Indiana, Mike Kelley, Ellsworth Kelly, Fernand Leger, Roy Lichtenstein, Henri Matisse, Joan Miro, and Pablo Picasso have all turned to the media at some point in their oeuvre. However, rather than look back, we’re looking to encapsulate facets of contemporary art and work with a curated group of artists that simultaneously express their ethos within a broad yet defined scope. Having more than thirty leading contemporary artists collaborate in this capacity makes Henzel Studio Collaborations an unprecedented program, even though the artisan practices remind us that the possibility has always been there.

Henzel Studio Collaborations was conceived with no regard to the past state of art and design. Contrary to common associations to rugs — an object that inherently possesses a strong sense of history and references to defined artistic and aesthetic movements — the purpose of this project is to provide a new and extraordinary channel for art to be made available through an alternate medium. Via a curated lens, a new context is shaped to reflect diverse dynamics of contemporary art and design.
Each phase or stage of the program represents a different visual portrayal that transcends temporal or popular factors in this ongoing initiative. The key factor that informed the concept behind Henzel Studio Collaborations and made it possible is the artistic practice of Calle Henzel, founder and creative director of Henzel Studio. Since 1999, he has created an autodidact operation where his work as an artist is expressed through the medium of rugs. Early on in his artistic career, he turned to rugs via a path of textile experimentations that solidified his commitment to the media. With an uncompromised artistic integrity and creative methodology, he has created his own independent and commercially viable structure. Over the years, Henzel has mastered the production of his chosen art form, utilizing techniques that have been developed and preserved by local communities in Nepal and India for centuries. Both author and producer of his designs, Henzel has elevated the implementation of art into the media at hand and further blurred the distinction between disciplines.
The inclusion of the participating artists was, in part, inspired by Calle Henzel’s independent voice and stature in the world of art and design. Each artist was invited and selected to synergize with the next, gravitating toward artists that have each established their own rules in the art world, either by practice or by status. The result is a curation that, when combined, offers an eclectic, aesthetically broad and authentic grouping, with an overall common denominator of openness to the cross-disciplinary practice at hand, which can also be traced in the artists’ body of work.
Art rugs have been around for quite some time in various forms, and some of the most prominent artists including Francis Bacon, Louise Bourgeois, Alexander Calder, Robert Indiana, Mike Kelley, Ellsworth Kelly, Fernand Leger, Roy Lichtenstein, Henri Matisse, Joan Miro, Pablo Picasso and Andy Warhol have all turned to the media at some point in their oeuvre. However, rather than look back, we’re looking to encapsulate facets of contemporary art and work with a curated group of artists that simultaneously express their ethos within a broad yet defined scope. Having forty leading contemporary artists collaborate in this capacity makes Henzel Studio Collaborations an unprecedented program, although artisan practices remind us that the possibility has always existed. The artists are all groundbreaking and leading forces within their respectivefields and media, ranging from sculpture, drawing, collage, photography, installations, reliefs and video art. Their mark has not only been honored and highlighted at leading galleries and institutions worldwide, but also widely documented and manifested as a mirror of cultural movements. For example, there’s Scott Campbell’s autonomous voice as both a tattoo and fine artist; Linder’s uncompromising work that helped shape the aesthetic of punk; Robert Knoke’s redefining of portraiture for the 21st century; Richard Prince’s enthralling methods of re-appropriation; Helmut Lang’s sculptural exploration beyond the human form and Leo Gabin spearheading the immersion of online user-generated content into art. Free to disregard design movements and related principles and rules, the featured artists were invited to freely and seamlessly translate their work and artistic ethos into the media at hand, exploring shape, volume and finishings, where practicality was secondary to concept. The creative brief allowed the artists to embrace the outcome as part of their body of work. Whatever the use of these rugs — hung onto a wall, or displayed on the floor — the chosen context will be as subjective as the question of applied versus fine art, a distinction we encourage and hope will remain.

Andy Warhol
Henzel Studio Heritage: Andy Warhol is a collection of limited-edition art rugs developed in partnership with The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. This project is part of Henzel Studio Heritage, an initiative dedicated to reinterpreting the works of influential artists through the medium of handcrafted rugs. Each rug in the collection is based on Warhol’s iconic artworks, carefully translated into hand-knotted compositions. The designs draw from Warhol’s silkscreens and paintings, incorporating his signature themes of celebrity, consumerism, and pop culture. This collaboration allows collectors and art enthusiasts to experience Warhol’s visual language in a new, tactile form — one that bridges contemporary art with the tradition of fine rug-making. By merging Warhol’s groundbreaking aesthetic with Henzel Studio’s commitment to craftsmanship, this collection presents functional art pieces that remain true to Warhol’s experimental spirit.

In partnership with The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Henzel Studio has honored Warhol’s enduring legacy through multiple collaborations, reinterpreting his most iconic and experimental works into a series of limited-edition handcrafted art rugs. These pieces serve as a dynamic recontextualization of Warhol’s oeuvre, offering a tactile exploration of his visual language while maintaining the experimental spirit of his creative process.
Each collaboration has brought Warhol’s celebrated imagery into the realm of textile artistry, transforming his work into intricate woven forms that extend beyond traditional mediums. This ongoing partnership reflects a commitment to bridging the worlds of fine art and handcrafted design, creating a seamless intersection between the visual power of Warhol’s art and the tactile nature of handcrafted textiles. Through these collaborations, Henzel Studio has reimagined Warhol’s pieces in new and innovative ways, ensuring that his artistic legacy is not only preserved but also redefined in exclusive, limited-edition designs that offer collectors a rare opportunity to engage with his groundbreaking vision in a unique and highly collectible format.
In the latest release, Calle Henzel has reimagined Warhol’s Oxidation Paintings (1978) through a series of hand-knotted rugs that capture the radical materiality of the original works. In these groundbreaking pieces, Warhol applied metallic copper paint to canvas and exposed it to chemical oxidation, creating richly textured, iridescent surfaces. Henzel Studio’s adaptation meticulously preserves the depth and complexity of these visual effects, masterfully capturing the dynamic interplay between control and chance—an ethos central to Warhol’s practice.
As part of the Henzel Studio Heritage initiative, Calle Henzel revisits Andy Warhol’s enduring fascination with Marilyn Monroe, reinterpreting both a lesser-known work and his original 1967 silkscreen portraits of Monroe. The collection draws inspiration from a maquette Warhol created for an unrealized artist’s book (discovered in Warhol's Time Capsule 55 in 1994), in which he deconstructed and abstracted his own images of Monroe. This fragmented approach served as a foundation for Calle Henzel, who has further pushed the boundaries of the original compositions, layering his distinctive artistic vocabulary onto Warhol’s iconic imagery. Through his signature organic forms, strategic cutouts, asymmetric fringes, and intricate surface treatments, Henzel creates a dynamic tension between Warhol’s instantly recognizable portrait and the raw, expressive nature of textile art. By distorting, reconfiguring, and reimagining Monroe’s visage, Henzel invites a renewed dialogue on the transformation of images and the intersection of fine art and materiality.
Each rug is meticulously handcrafted in wool and silk, employing high and low pile techniques to evoke texture, dimensionality, and movement. The interplay of materials and craftsmanship ensures that no two pieces are identical, reinforcing their one-of-a-kind quality. Available in limited editions, each rug is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity, affirming its status as both a collectible artwork and a functional object. By extending Warhol’s legacy into the realm of contemporary textile design, this collaboration underscores Henzel Studio’s commitment to redefining the relationship between art, craft, and material innovation. The result is a collection that not only honors Warhol’s artistic vision but also expands its reach, allowing collectors and art enthusiasts to engage with his work in an entirely new, immersive form.
Richard Bernstein
Henzel Studio's collaboration with the Richard Bernstein Estate introduces a significant tribute to the artist’s influential body of work. The first release, Black Jello Heart, 1969, reinterpreted as Black Jello Heart, 2022, designed by Calle Henzel, reflects the bold aesthetic and innovative spirit that defined Bernstein’s legacy in the Pop Art movement.
Richard Bernstein is most widely remembered for his iconic, larger-than-life covers for Interview Magazine, the publication founded by Andy Warhol in 1969. Bernstein's covers captured the essence of the Pop Art era, blending glamour, celebrity culture, and commercial aesthetics with high art, blurring the lines between the two. His graphic, vibrant use of color and striking portraiture reflected the pulsating energy of the 1960s and 1970s, contributing to the visual language of a generation.
A true pioneer in the art world, Bernstein was not confined to magazine covers. He was a key figure in the development of Pop Art, alongside Warhol and others, and his work was groundbreaking in its use of commercial techniques to achieve fine art status. His works celebrated the excess, style, and iconography of the time, drawing inspiration from advertising, mass media, and pop culture. His distinctive approach to portraiture redefined how celebrity was represented, blending art with the vibrancy of mass communication.
Bernstein’s art has been exhibited in leading international galleries and is part of the permanent collections of institutions like the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, D.C. His exhibitions spanned iconic spaces such as the Iris Clert Gallery in Paris, Galerie Barozzi in Venice, and the Axiom Gallery in London, among others.
The Black Jello Heart rug, reimagined by Calle Henzel, builds upon Bernstein’s innovative approach, translating his graphic style into a tactile, contemporary medium. The collaboration underscores Henzel Studio's commitment to preserving and celebrating the legacies of trailblazing artists, while contributing to the continued dialogue between art, design, and culture.
This collaboration not only honors Bernstein’s visual language but also brings his art into a new realm, allowing collectors and art enthusiasts to engage with his work in a novel, contemporary form. As we continue to explore the intersection of commercial art and fine art through this collaboration, Black Jello Heart, 2022 offers a reflection on the enduring relevance of Richard Bernstein’s legacy in shaping the visual culture of today.

Tom of Finland
Henzel Studio, in collaboration with the Tom of Finland Foundation, proudly presents a collection honoring the legacy of Tom of Finland, a pioneering artist known for his bold depictions of hyper-masculinity and homoerotic imagery. His work redefined perceptions of masculinity and became a symbol of queer identity, blending sexuality, fantasy, and power with fine art.
Tom of Finland’s iconic imagery celebrated intimacy and strength, offering a powerful alternative vision of masculinity that resonated with the LGBTQ+ community while influencing broader cultural movements. His work is part of major collections, including MoMA and Tate Modern, and has been showcased in influential museum installations worldwide, further cementing his place in art history.
This collaboration with the Tom of Finland Foundation reinterprets his art through handcrafted rugs, giving his timeless imagery a contemporary, tactile form. By preserving and continuing his legacy, Henzel Studio ensures Tom of Finland’s influence continues to inspire and empower future generations.

Carl Fredrik Reuterswärd
HENZEL STUDIO is pleased to partner with the Non-Violence Project on a limited collection of fine art rugs after Swedish artist Carl Fredrik Reuterswärd’s iconic sculpture The Knotted Gun. Regarded as the most recognized artistic statements promoting non-violence, the sculpture was created after the artist’s grief of his friend the musician and The Beatles member John Lennon’s tragic death in 1980. Designed by Calle Henzel, the collection of hand knotted rugs presents scanned adaptations of the sculpture in five different colors. Each rug is free-from, made of 100% silk and designed with variable pile-heights assigned to create a layered adaptation of the sculpture. The bronze sculpture is casted after an oversized Colt Python .357 Magnum revolver with its muzzle tied in a knot. The original version of the sculpture was installed at the John Lennon memorial grounds of Strawberry Fields in New York’s Central Park, across from the Dakota, the building where the musician and his wife Yoko Ono lived together. In 1988, Luxembourg donated the original sculpture to the United Nations, and it was moved and installed outside of the headquarters of the United Nations Headquarters in New York. Since 1993, the sculpture has been the symbol of The Non Violence Project (NVP), a nonprofit organization that promotes social change through violence-prevention education programs.

Erode - Morph - Bloom
Erode - Morph - Bloom, an exhibition in conjunction with Frieze LA, featured works by six contemporary artists; Vanessa Beecroft, Nan Goldin, Kim Gordon, Katerina Jebb, Mary McCartney and Marilyn Minter. The exhibition highlighted six hand-knotted rugs designed by each artist as part of Henzel Studio’s artist program. Alongside the exclusive textiles, and positioned in close proximity, are original artworks selected together with each artist to establish a cross-media relationship and narrative, determined by their output within the gallery’s domicile layout and the spatial engagement with surrounding furniture designs and architectural elements. The artists’ rugs collectively evoke a cyclical course that is directly tied with their artisanal makings — here the erosion of raw materials, the morphing from one media to another, and its blossoming into the end result — play a role in terms of production, subject matter, and design attributes.
