Anselm Reyle is a German artist whose work engages directly with the legacy of postwar abstraction, reactivating its formal vocabulary within the context of contemporary visual culture. Since the late 1990s, Reyle has revisited the languages of 1960s and 1970s modernism — particularly gestural abstraction, monochrome painting, and the readymade — recasting them through materials associated with mass production, decoration, and display. By doing so, he probes how aesthetic value is constructed and how the ideals of modernism persist, mutate, or collapse within a consumer-driven environment.
Central to Reyle’s practice is the use of industrial and synthetic materials — day-glo and fluorescent pigments, neon, mirrored surfaces, and crumpled metallic foils — often encased in acrylic glass. These works transform the spontaneous gesture of informal painting into something both theatrical and mediated, where intuition is preserved but reframed through processes of staging and encapsulation. The folded foil compositions, arranged by the artist in an improvisatory manner, function simultaneously as painting and object, invoking the histories of Nouveau Réalisme and European abstraction while questioning their continued authority.
Reyle’s works frequently operate on the threshold between art and design, seduction and critique. Their heightened visual appeal draws viewers into a sensory encounter that ultimately raises questions about taste, spectacle, and the institutional framing of culture. By recycling and recontextualizing established forms, Reyle constructs a visual language that reflects on history not as a closed canon, but as a material to be continually re-edited.
The artist’s work is represented in major international collections, including ARKEN Museum for Moderne Kunst, Ishøj; Saatchi Gallery, London; the Daimler Collection, Berlin; the Pinault Collection, Venice; and the Rubell Museum, Miami.
Selected exhibitions: Gagosian, New York; König Galerie, Berlin; Almine Rech Gallery, New York and Bass Museum of Art, Miami.
