Vanessa Beecroft’s work has been shown internationally since 1993, and has shaped performance art, the representation of the female body, and the sociopolitical discussions of art.
Her performances have been an ongoing practice for over twentyfive years. Presented across some of the world’s preeminent museums and major contemporary events, Beecroft’s performances highlight the tensions between nakedness and clothing, constraint and freedom, the collective and the individual, and human strength and weakness.
Beecroft's collaboration with Henzel Studio was initiated in 2018 during a period when Beecroft returned to the origins of her classical training and immersed herself completely into painting and sculpture that materialized her performances and turned them into objects. One of these paintings of a distorted female figure was selected to be appropriated into a and knotted rug. The stunning end-result was achieved through painstaking work that spanned more than 2 years, where variable pile-heights and material compositions were applied to achieve a painterly effect directly referencing the original work.
Selected exhibitions: Art Basel, Miami; Galleria Vittorio Emanuele, Milan; MAXXI National Museum of 21-Century Arts, Rome; Deste Foundation, Athens; Guggenheim Museum, New York
