Minter has a painterly sensibility and an anarchistic attitude, with a no-nonsense approach to often-delicate subject matters. Photographer, painter, and videographer Marilyn Minter began her art career in the late 80’s with an unflinching series of paintings based on still images from hardcore pornography. Since then, the artist’s work has entered a broader context exploring human desire and pleasure, and has turned into a powerful vision of glamour and sexuality, degradation and triumph and dirt and luminescence. Although her work doesn’t intend to scandalize, it casually traverses a mixed realm that features abjection, excess, and the visceral as a central aesthetic. Through extreme close-ups, her subjects are oftentimes turned into detailed abstractions, refuting reality to suggest a different way of seeing. And as a matter of technique, she even uses her fingers to flesh out or smooth sections of her paintings moving from a figurative to an abstract language. Minter is part of a generation that has a painterly sensibility and an anarchistic attitude, with a no-nonsense approach to often-delicate subject matters. In Minter’s practice, both photographs and paintings proceed from the same starting point. She organizes photo shoots in her studio, and assembles and reworks details from different photographs for digital compositions that are thereafter turned into final works.

For Henzel Studio, Minter re-appropriated her photograph Cracked Glass. Through use of variable pile-heights, actual cracks have been created. The water drops are elevated and have been enhanced with silk adding a contrasting sheen.

Image: Portrait of Marilyn Minter.
